The 4th of July is a fitting day to celebrate the music of George M. Cohen. He dominated Broadway in the early 20th century and was known for writing patriotic songs and shows. Cohan was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his contribution to morale for his songs, "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Over There". So extensive was his influence felt on the Great White Way a statue honoring him was erected in Duffy Square in New York City. The sad reality today is that his songs are rarely sung let alone known. The best way for someone to learn about him is to watch the Warner Bros. classic, "Yankee Doodle Dandy" starring James Cagney as George M. Cohan.
